The Roots of Compassion:
A 5-day Silent Mindfulness & Compassion Practice Retreat

What people are saying...
Join us for a 5-day mindfulness and compassion retreat in the style of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in the comfort of your own home.  The retreat will be a deep exploration of the roots of mindfulness and compassion practices, both experientially and through a series of talks on Buddhist teachings and connected ideas from philosophy, poetry, and the sciences.

Schedule Details / Clarification:
The retreat starts at 6:00pm on Sunday and closes at 3:00pm on Friday. For the full schedule which includes a flexible period from 12:30pm - 4:00pm daily please follow this link.

Roots of Compassion Theme:
We'll explore Buddhist teachings on patience and endurance as spiritual practice (and not just putting up with things) by taking a deep dive into the writings of the 8th century Buddhist teacher Shantideva. Shantideva's great work the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra (A Guide to the Life of a Bodhisattva) has been studied by Mahayana Buddhists through the centuries and is revered by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many other teachers. We'll especially investigate Santideva's chapter on patience and see what we can learn and practice. Our online-while-at-home retreat may help to create an ideal environment in which to learn and practice patience more deeply. You can read more about Shantideva here.

Course details
This Live Online retreat will be held mostly in silence and will include a series of gently guided mindfulness practices including sitting meditation, walking meditation, gentle yoga, and the body scan, as well as compassion cultivation and loving kindness meditations. Individual private interviews with Lead Instructor Tim Burnett will also be available.

The daily schedule allows an integration of committed meditation practice, teachings, and your life at home. We will have us away from the screen for most of the afternoon. We have found this format leads to an engagement with this work that is both deep and realistic. We aren't simply "moving" our retreat from in person to Zoom. Rather we have re-invented a home-based retreat. This format has been very effective for lead teacher, Tim Burnett, in previous retreats.

Who this event is for: This adult event will be highly relevant to students of mindfulness and compassion interested in deepening their practice and to teachers of mindfulness and compassion who would like to strengthen their background understanding of the Buddhist roots of contemporary programs like MBSR and MSC.

Getting ready for a multi-day online retreat:

You will need a quiet room or corner (headphones can help) for our periods of formal practice and we invite you to think about the rest of the day. You can do our integrated online retreats at home or you could consider booking yourself a stay somewhere for a personal retreat. Both work well.

When we are not together formally on Zoom, you will be invited to integrate your practice into the situation you find yourself in. While we recommend having a conversation with family ahead of the retreat around maintaining a quieter home environment, we also encourage being very flexible and accommodating to the needs of family, peers, or essential work during the retreat week.

Our online "retreats" are not so much retreats in terms of getting away from it all but an opportunity to integrate committed mindfulness practice into your life at home. It will be a time to explore seeing everything in life as part of the retreat and show up with awareness, acceptance and kindness to every moment of the day whether it's during meditation with Zoom, helping your children, exercising, handling essential work tasks, or if you need to run an errand.

Before practicing for nearly a full week we recommend that you have experience with mindfulness or related contemplative practices. The retreat is designed first for graduates of the intensive 8-week classes in Mindful Self-Compassion and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and should also be fine for those who have tasted mindfulness or meditation in teacher-led classes, retreats, or meditation centers. Contact us if you have questions about whether this retreat will be appropriate for you.
